NEW YORK – Three people were shot Wednesday night in Queens, and law enforcement sources told NBC New York that a father and his 8-year-old son were among the victims.
The shooting happened sometime before 10 p.m. in the St. Albans neighborhood, east of Roy Wilkins Park, police said. Three NYPD sources with direct knowledge of the investigation told our sister network NBC that a bullet struck the boy in the shoulder, while his 39-year-old father was shot multiple times in the leg and foot.
The third person, a 57-year-old man, suffered a scratch on his ankle and refused medical attention, New York police sources said.
The father and son were taken to Jamaica Hospital, where they are expected to recover, police sources said. The father, identified as Tyshawn Moses, has been the victim of two other shootings, in 2005 and 2013, according to two senior law enforcement officials.
Moses is likely to be arrested at the hospital, as there is an active warrant for his arrest for a shooting in 2019, senior law enforcement officials said. He is a member of Gang 9 Trey Crip and has been arrested 23 times, sources said.
According to NYPD sources, 19 shell casings were recovered at the scene.
Police said the shooters fired multiple rounds from a dark-colored sedan before taking off. An investigation is ongoing.
The rise in gun violence in the five boroughs in recent months has prompted local leaders to call on Mayor Bill de Blasio to do more to address the problem of gun and gang violence.
Last month, the mayor announced “Safe Summer NYC,” a plan to stop gun violence and help the city recover from the pandemic. The plan includes adding more youth employment spaces, hosting “Saturday Night Light games” at 100 sites, launching safe parks and gang-free zones, as well as other measures to increase community participation. The plan also includes adding more police to specific areas.
In a tweet Wednesday night, the Sergeants Benevolent Association said they are not to blame for the spike in crime, but rather elected officials are to blame for changing the laws.
