The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia considers public festivals to be possible in late summer
In North Rhine-Westphalia, if the number of infections falls and the number of vaccinations rises, citizens could go to public festivals again from late summer onwards. “If there is a further decline in the number of infections, there are good prospects for traditional, regional open-air folk festivals in late summer,” said Minister of Economic Affairs, Andreas Pinkwart. However, the requirements are the organizers’ hygiene concepts. “I very much wish that our popular traditional celebrations (…) can take place again as soon as possible,” said Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann.

Slump in sales in the hospitality industry
The restrictions in the wake of the corona pandemic also resulted in losses for Germany’s innkeepers in the first quarter. Although business was somewhat better again in March, sales in hotels, restaurants and cafes in the three months were price-adjusted by almost two thirds (62.2 percent) below the previous year’s level, as calculated by the Federal Statistical Office. According to the Wiesbaden authority, hotels and guest houses were hit harder than average, and compared to the previous year, which was only partially affected by the pandemic, they lost 77.2 percent of their revenues in real terms. Tourist overnight stays were banned in March 2021, as in the previous months. Hotels, pensions or inns were only allowed to accept business travelers. From February to March, sales in the industry recovered slightly.

Müller defends inconsistent tourism strategies in the countries
Berlin’s Governing Mayor Michael Müller defended the divergent opening strategies in the federal states for tourism. There are still “different requirements and different numbers of infections and courses, different test options,” said Müller in the joint Morning magazine from ARD and ZDF. He also referred to court decisions “which make one thing or the other possible or not”.
At the same time, Müller emphasized with a view to Berlin, among other things, that tourism in large cities is different from, for example, in rural regions. In the cities, people are not outdoors all day and then retreat to their holiday homes, but rather spend more time in closed rooms. At the same time, Müller was convinced that things are going “step by step” in all federal states. Towards the summer, if the numbers continue to develop as they are currently, “then a great deal will be possible”.

Education union against compulsory vaccination for teachers
The chairwoman of the GEW education union, Marlis Tepe, has spoken out against compulsory corona vaccination for teachers. “We think highly of making a vaccination offer for all teachers,” said Tepe in common Morning magazine from ARD and ZDF. However, they reject compulsory vaccination. It is also easy to understand that there is no compulsory vaccination for children in schools.
A few days ago, the President of the German Teachers’ Association, Heinz-Peter Meidinger, brought into play a compulsory vaccination for civil servant teachers. He expects a political debate on the subject, Meidinger told the “world”. In his opinion, the state would have the means to do so if there was a corresponding legal regulation.
