Celtic leader’s house burned down

The chief executive of Scottish club Celtic was the victim of an apparent explosion and fire at his home on Wednesday.

Celtic reported that Peter Lawwell and his family were able to escape safely from the residence after it caught fire around 1 a.m. local time.

The club said “an explosion and fire” caused significant damage to the house located in Thorntonhall near Glasgow.

“We know that the Scottish police have launched a criminal investigation,” Celtic said.

Lawwell will retire next month after 18 years as head of the storied club whose run of nine Scottish league titles was broken by Rangers this season.

As a member of the board of directors of the Association of European Clubs, Lawwell has participated in negotiations over the last decade to modify the format of the Champions League.
