Record number of 986,433 injections against corona last week | Inland

That is of course good news, but at the same time it is also becoming a necessity. Several records will have to be broken if our country is to reach the target number of injections of approximately 18 million by the beginning of July. In order to achieve this, the weekly figure must be more than 1.5 million.

Experts have previously expressed their concerns about this in this newspaper. “We really need to speed up the injection,” said vaccinologist Ben van der Zeijst. However, according to the corona dashboard, the figure of 1.5 million will not be reached next week. Then for the first time more than 1 million vaccinations would have to be administered.

According to the RIVM, almost 5.7 million first injections have now been taken in our country. In addition, nearly 1.8 million people have also received the second vaccination. Of the people aged 80 and 90 who have been tested at the GGD, the vast majority have already been fully vaccinated (more than 90 percent). The majority of vaccinated 75 to 79 year olds have also already received the second shot. The majority of the age groups younger than 75 have not yet been fully vaccinated.

From a European perspective, there is still work to be done for our country. Because with a percentage of doses administered in proportion to the total population of 43.5, we still fall just outside the top 10. For example, we have countries such as Luxembourg (45.5 percent), Belgium (46.1 percent) and Germany (47, 8 percent). In those countries, the daily number of reported new infections is therefore approximately half lower than in the Netherlands.

2 million a week

In the coming weeks, the GGDs will work towards putting 2 million injections per week. According to a spokeswoman for the national organization GGD GHOR Nederland, the health services are still looking for about a thousand doctors to be able to reach that number. Also “a few thousand” first aiders and hosts are needed. People with a first aid diploma can receive vaccinees who become unwell after an injection and hosts are needed to receive people and direct them to the right place.

According to the spokeswoman, there is “enough supply” and therefore finding staff on time is no problem. In addition, there are about a thousand soldiers ready to help. According to the GGD it is not yet clear when they will be deployed. If a lot of vaccines are suddenly delivered at the same time, hospitals can also step in and inject up to half a million extra injections per week.

Figures in the right direction

Partly as a result of the vaccination, the corona figures in our country are going in the right direction, the RIVM reported on Tuesday. In the past week, according to the institute, 21 percent fewer corona patients were admitted to the hospital than the week before. The number of reported persons with a positive coronate test result decreased by 25 percent to 35,142. The percentage of positive people remained stable at 12.2, compared to 12.3 a week earlier. Fewer people also got tested (23 percent).

Virologist Louis Kroes stated earlier this week that further relaxation should be possible now. According to him, museums and theaters, for example, can already open their doors responsibly, especially because the outlook is becoming increasingly favorable due to the warmer weather and the progress of vaccination. Bed planner Ernst Kuipers reported on Monday that it was still a bit too early, but added that if the number of hospital admissions continues to fall rapidly, the cabinet should take a decision on this earlier than June.
