COLUMBUS, Ohio, USA (AP) – MLS’s Columbus team decided to keep the Crew nickname after fans opposed a measure that would eliminate it.
The franchise said it will continue to identify itself as the Columbus Crew after a meeting with some disgruntled fans.
Through social networks, the club’s fans strongly opposed the removal of the nickname. Last week, the team announced that it would now be called Columbus SC.
“The importance of keeping the Crew as the primary identifier for the team was clear,” the group that controls the club, which includes Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam, said in a statement. “The decision we made in these conversations is that the Columbus Crew will remain the official name of the team going forward.”
What will be modified will be the new shield, to include the name Crew.
