Managua, May 18 (EFE) .- Nicaragua increased to 185 the number of deaths due to the covid-19 pandemic and to 7,213 confirmed cases since the disease entered the country more than a year ago, according to the weekly report released this Tuesday by the Ministry of Health.

From Wednesday of last week until 10.00 local time (16.00 GMT) this Tuesday there was a new death attributable to covid-19, to reach 185, and 107 new confirmed or probable cases per clinic, to total 7,213, according to with the official report.

According to official data, since last October the pandemic has taken the life of one person every week, constantly.

However, it is also the first time, so far this year, that more than a hundred cases of covid-19 have been reported in a single week, precisely at a time when the Multidisciplinary Scientific Committee has warned of an increase “important” contagion.

Likewise, according to the Ministry of Health, in the last 7 days “there were other deaths in people who have been under follow-up due to pulmonary thromboembolism, diabetes mellitus, acute myocardial infarction, hypertensive crisis and bacterial pneumonias”, although it did not specify either the amount or whether the patients were diagnosed with coronavirus.

According to the report from the health authorities, since the beginning of the pandemic to date they have “followed up with a responsible and careful monitoring of 5,731 people”, and another 71 who remained under a similar condition “have completed the established period.”

The government’s data is not recognized by the Nicaraguan medical union, which maintains its demand that the Ministry of Health reveal the “real data” of the pandemic.

Independent doctors in Nicaragua credit the statistics of the independent Covid-19 Citizen Observatory, made up of a network of doctors and volunteers who register people with symptoms of the disease.

According to that Observatory, 3,223 deaths from pneumonia and other symptoms of covid-19 were registered up to last December 12, with 15,756 cases that it qualifies as “suspicious”, due to the fact that PCR tests are restricted in Nicaragua.

For its part, a study of excess mortality prepared by the Multidisciplinary Scientific Committee, which brings together doctors and specialists in other sciences, indicated that the pandemic left between 7,500 and 8,500 deaths between March and August 2020, the month in which the Ministry of Salud stopped publishing the weekly Epidemiological Bulletin.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has shown concern about the pandemic in Nicaragua, where the authorities promote crowds, apply few social prevention actions, avoid restrictions and provide scant or confusing information on covid-19. EFE
