The results of the municipal organization’s investigation came out in parts. This is how outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte spoke about it already during the May 11 press conference. And Anja Schreijer, head of infectious disease control at the GGD Amsterdam-Amstelland, also showed shine its light about the massive violation of the corona rules on King’s Day 2021. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Schreijer in response to the 466 infections that were identified at the time.

A week later, 17 infections are added, but the number of infections is probably higher. “In the end we will never be able to fully determine the exact number, because not everyone indicates where he was present that day and not everyone is tested,” the GGD press release reports. Self-tests are certainly one for people with complaints reliable alternative for the PCR tests of the GGD.

Clusters

Three-quarters of the 483 positive tests were found in people between the ages of 19 and 30. There were seventeen clusters, events in which at least three people were infected. One cluster concerned people who do not live in the Amsterdam region: day trippers who came to celebrate King’s Day in the capital.

81 percent of the clusters took place indoors, according to the GGD, at parties where four to forty people were indoors. This means that contamination is also possible in crowds in the open air. About 60 percent of the infected people actually went to such a large group in the Amsterdam city center or a park.

Partly due to King’s Day, the number of infections in Amsterdam-Amstelland increased by last week 17 percent. Virologist and OMT member Menno de Jong (Amsterdam UMC) suggested all that the Ajax championship party on May 2 also contributed to this. The impact of that incident, where estimated 14,000 Ajax fans did not comply with the corona rules, the Amsterdam GGD is still investigating.
