Turkish President Erdogan has sharply criticized the United States and Austria for their support for Israel. He wants to renegotiate the status of Jerusalem.
Ankara – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sharply criticized US President Joe Biden. The background to this is the escalation of violence in the Middle East. The Washington Post had previously reported that the Biden government had approved a potential $ 735 million arms sale to Israel. There are no official information on this so far. The relationship between the NATO partners USA and Turkey has been more than tense for some time.
“Unfortunately, you are making history with your bloody hands,” said Erdogan about the arms deal on Monday evening. The soil of Palestine will be “washed with horror, pain and blood,” said the President of Turkey. In view of the violence, many states have called for a ceasefire, and the US government headed by Joe Biden has made similar statements.
Erdogan: Anger over the raising of Israeli flags in Austria
But Erdogan’s crosshairs weren’t the only ones to hit the US government. Addressing Austria, the Turkish President sharply condemned the hoisting of Israeli cars in front of government buildings. In front of the Chancellery and the Foreign Ministry, a flag with the Star of David waved on Friday as a sign of solidarity with Israel in the Gaza conflict. “I curse the Austrian state,” said Erdogan: “The Austrian state is probably trying to issue the bill for the Jews who it subjected to genocide to the Muslims,” emphasized Erdogan, referring to the Holocaust. So far, there has been no reaction on his part to similar actions in Germany. Some voices had blamed Erdogan for the growing anti-Semitism.

Erdogan also urged the imposition of sanctions in a telephone conversation with Pope Francis. The Turkish President regards the Pope’s response as crucial for mobilizing other Christian states and the international community.
Middle East conflict: Erdogan wants to renegotiate Jerusalem’s status
Erdogan calls for a new regulation of Jerusalem. According to his plans, the city should be run by a commission made up of representatives from Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It seems impossible that this plan could be accepted by the Israeli government. Erdogan had repeatedly accused Israel in the past of violating the status of Jerusalem, restricting religious freedom by blocking the holy places and pursuing an “occupation policy” in Palestine. Erdogan even called Israel a “terrorist state”. (as with dpa)
