Apple Music Lossless was announced alongside support for Dolby Atmos spatial audio. For lovers of high quality music, lossless news will be huge. Upgrading one of the mainstream music streaming services with high fidelity sound is sure to appeal to audiophiles and avid listeners. But how good will the music be thanks to Apple Music’s ALAC codec? Here’s what Apple revealed in its press release today.
Does Apple Music Lossless Sound Better Than Spotify?
Apple Music Lossless sounds better than Spotify because it is capable of outputting audio up to 24-bit 192Hz.
Thanks to its ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec), users can “hear exactly the same things as artists created in the studio”. In addition, this service is offered free of charge as part of the standard Apple Music subscription.
It should be noted, however, that to hear the best audio quality from Apple Music Lossless, users will need to use external equipment to generate the sound. Apple recommends a “USB digital-to-analog converter” called a DAC.
Although Spotify is not yet able to match the audio quality of Apple Music Lossless, it plans to release a “HiFi” level at some point this year. When that happens, the gap between Spotify and Apple will narrow again.
Audiophiles with high-end gear will no doubt be eager to listen to hi-fi offerings from Apple and Spotify. It will be interesting to see how many users walk away from Tidal Masters and other services to try out the most common apps.
In other Apple news, the recently announced AirTag has a case that costs $ 449. (That’s over 15 times the normal price.)
