Los Angeles (AP) – Two days before the Oscar gala, Jane Fonda and Joaquin Phoenix led a protest against climate change in Los Angeles.
At the “Fire Drill Fridays” demonstration they were supported by colleagues such as Rosanna Arquette, Catherine Keener and the sisters Rooney and Kate Mara. “It is so important that celebrities use their voices to raise awareness of the climate crisis,” said Fonda in a speech to hundreds of demonstrators.
The activists and environmental groups are calling, among other things, for an end to oil drilling in California and a sharp reduction in the burning of fossil fuels.
Fonda (82) had led protests in Washington since October and was arrested five times. Joaquin Phoenix stood by her side at a Friday demonstration in mid-January in the capital and was then taken away in handcuffs. The rally on Friday was the first “Fire Drill” in California, and more are planned. There were no arrests, as the “Hollywood Reporter” reported.
At the Oscars on Sunday, Phoenix has been nominated for best leading actor with its “Joker” role. Fonda is among the stars invited to hand out trophies on stage.
The actress (“The China Syndrome”, “Grace and Frankie”) has been politically active for decades. She was one of the most famous fighters against the Vietnam War in the 1970s. At the time, many conservative Americans criticized her as “Hanoi Jane”.
