DSM downtown blocks streets for entertainment district

Des Moines announced the closure of parts of downtown to create an entertainment experience. Between May 21 and September 4, parts of Court Street will be closed to traffic every Friday and Saturday. This will allow for outdoor seating, live street vendors and music. It will be a “recreation area” for those 21 and over. There will be no charge to enter the entertainment area, but credentials will be required to access it. It will lock down an area two blocks around Court Street and Third Street between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m., and will prohibit parking in certain areas, but visitors are encouraged to use nearby parking ramps. Including Milwaukee and Kansas City, located in popular bars and restaurants, have proven their worth. Additionally, the increased security will allow customers to feel safe and secure when visiting the Court Street area, ”Polk County Board of Directors Tom Hawkinsmith said. The first weekend will coincide with the Dew Tour which will take place at the Lauridsen Skatepark.

It will close a two-block area around Court Street and Third Street between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. Some areas will prevent on-street parking, but visitors are encouraged to use nearby parking ramps.

“This is a similar approach that other cities, including Milwaukee and Kansas City, have taken in popular bars and restaurants and has been proven to work. In addition, additional security will ensure that beneficiaries feel safe when visiting the Court Street area, ”Polk County Council told Supervisor Tom Hawkinsmith.

The first weekend will coincide with the Dew Tour at Lauridsen Skatepark.
