Shortage of nurses: reduction of services in some NB hospitals

Bed closures in Campbellton

Beds will be temporarily closed at the psychiatric unit at the Campbellton Regional Hospital as of Monday.

Vitalité health network spokesperson Thomas Lizotte confirms that 8 of the 20 beds usually available in the acute psychiatric care unit will be closed due to the lack of nursing staff.

The Vitalité network specifies that the situation will be reassessed on a daily basis.

Not enough nurses in the emergency room in Saint-Jean

The Saint-Jean regional hospital will also have to deal with a small team on weekends. The Horizon health network announces that it anticipates a shortage of nurses in the emergency room.

This is not a new situation, but it is becoming more important, says Geri Geldart, vice president of clinical services at Horizon.

The network specifies that people in need of emergency medical care can still present to the hospital, but that people with less serious or less urgent problems should turn to other services, such as their family doctor, a walk-in clinic, Tele-Care 811 or a pharmacy.

A recurring situation

The shortage of nurses led to a reduction in services at CHU Dumont in Moncton last weekend. The ambulances then had to be redirected to the Moncton Hospital.

Measures to reduce traffic at this establishment, as well as at the Stella-Maris-de-Kent Hospital, have been in effect since April 1.

Earlier this month, Vitalité health network explained that this critical situation is caused by various factors, including measures against COVID-19, high occupancy rates and the national shortage of doctors and nurses.
