The AMB reiterates its full support for the Barcelona taxi

The mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau has once again shown her support for the taxi sector in the Barcelona metropolitan area and has labeled Uber as «profiteer pirates»For trying to do business in Barcelona without complying with the AMB regulations.

In today’s plenary session in the Town Hall, a councilor of the Popular Party asked Colau about his position regarding Uber’s return to Barcelona and why the taxi drivers were against the transport company operating in the metropolitan area.

Colau wanted to make clear his support for the public taxi sector and has criticized speculative interference by disruptive companies that engage in unfair competition, disguise themselves as technological innovation and do not pay their taxes.

«The municipal and metropolitan government’s commitment is absolute to the taxi sector, a sector that provides a public mobility service in our city and which has experienced many difficulties, especially in these times of pandemic, but before this they have also suffered the irruption of these digital platforms that are pirates, and that in addition to unfair competition do not pay taxes.

Likewise, Colau has clarified that “they disguise themselves as technological innovation, but they are not, but they intend to do business without complying with the rules.”

«Here they have found the firmness of this government, and I am very proud to know that Barcelona is going to be a pioneer city and metropolitan area throughout the state, in promoting a regulation that we finally got approved, both by the State and by the Generalitat of Catalunya”.

The mayor has affirmed that the Metropolitan Taxi Institute (IMET) will ensure that the regulations are complied with. In this way, it has closed the door to adapt it for others: “Uber must comply with the norm, just like any other platform that wants to operate in Barcelona.”
