Paris plans to significantly reduce traffic in the city center / Day in the future

The Paris City Council on Wednesday launched a public consultation on the introduction of a restricted traffic area in the city center, similar to what has been done in Lille, Nantes and other European cities.

The goal is to significantly reduce traffic in four areas of the city center by 2022 and partly in districts 5, 6 and 7.

The plan stipulates that only local residents will be allowed to travel in this area with their own vehicles, taxis and buses, freight delivery vehicles will be allowed, as well as various masters and craftsmen will be allowed to enter. More precise decisions on who will be allowed to enter and move in the area by means of vehicles are planned to be taken during the consultations.

Parisians can take part in the consultation by answering questions on the city’s official website.

The plan aims to prioritize pedestrians and cyclists and improve their safety, reduce air pollution and noise, said the deputy mayor of Paris, adding that reducing traffic to Rivoli Street, one of the largest commercial streets in Paris, led to a noise reduction of 2.2 decibels.

Paris Mayor Anna Idalgo plans to reduce air pollution and make Paris a cyclist-friendly city, as well as reduce traffic at schools.

At the end of the first three-month quarantine regime, Paris officials set up 50 kilometers of cycle paths, originally planned as a temporary measure, but Idlago later announced that these cycle paths would become a permanent feature of the city in the autumn.
