Alabama Shakes’ drummer Steve Johnson is in custody after being charged with child abuse. Police took him into custody in Limestone County, Alabama, on Wednesday (March 24).
According to the Associated Press, he was charged with “willful torture, willful abuse and cruel beating or other willful ill-treatment of a child under the age of 18”. The reading of the indictment is scheduled for April 7, 2021.
Johnson has a criminal record
Steve Johnson pleaded guilty to violating a protection order last March. He was then sentenced to one year in prison, with a suspended sentence of 24 months.
Alabama Shakes has been on hiatus since 2018 as singer Brittany Howard focuses on her solo career. In 2015 her last album “Sound & Color” was released.
So far, neither Howard nor any other member of the band have commented on the incidents or Johnson’s arrest.
