Ex-national player Aogo considers the expulsion of the Hertha supervisory board Lehmann excessive. He made that clear in an interview. In one case, however, the TV expert filed a criminal complaint.
Dennis Aogo thinks it is wrong that Jens Lehmann lost his position on the supervisory board of Bundesliga soccer club Hertha BSC after making racist statements against him. “I would not have expected Hertha to exclude him from all offices so quickly. I also feel that this is an overreaction in the short time it takes,” said the 34-year-old in the “Spiegel” interview.
“This is Cancel Culture”
The former national goalkeeper Lehmann had written in a Whatsapp message that was erroneously sent to Aogo: “Is Dennis actually your quota black?” It was mistaken with a laughing smiley in front of the question mark. He never assumed that Lehmann was “a racist”. He doesn’t think “that he holds such views,” said the former international.
In such cases, Aogo would like an objective and intensive dialogue. “After that you can always think about whether a collaboration is still possible or not.” But Aogo refuses to say from the outset that you don’t want to have anything to do with them. “That’s cancel culture,” said Aogo.
“There were death threats”
The 34-year-old came under pressure himself. In a game analysis on Sky broadcaster he said about the Manchester City team that the team trained “to the point of gassing”. Aogo is currently ceasing to work as an expert.
He and his wife have received massive abuse in the past few days. “It’s extreme. There have been death threats and extremely racist slurs against me and my wife. Bottom drawer.” Aogo also made it clear in the interview that the controversy over Tübigen’s mayor Boris Palmer was over for him.
No grudge against Palmer
The politician had picked up an alleged quote from Aogo on Facebook. He is said to have given himself a racist title for an obscene pick-up. Palmer responded to the alleged quote with the words: “The Aogo is a bad racist.” Palmer himself emphasizes that he meant this ironically.
Aogo responded to the quote with a criminal complaint because it came from a fake profile. In terms of content, he has nothing against Palmer’s action, said Aogo, as it is also directed against the cancel culture. For him, only the linguistic level is “problematic”.
