Her last album “Magma” was nominated for a Grammy. But also the new CD «Fortitude» by the French metal band Gojira is a blast. Blick spoke to the two brothers, singer Joe Duplantier (44) and drummer Mario Duplantier (39).
–
Joe: At home in the south of France. I’ve lived in New York for the past ten years but moved back to Europe before the pandemic. Also for the sake of the children. The school system here is better than in the US.
–
Mario: We were homesick. Now we’ve been back home for over a year. But already the wanderlust grabs me again.
–
How much did the lockdown bother you?
–
Joe: Professionally very. As is well known, everything in the culture industry stands still. In my private life, however, the last year was very fulfilling. I’m a guy who does 25 things in parallel all the time. For the past 15 months I could only concentrate on one thing for once: the family.
–
It took you five years for the new CD. Why so long?
–
Mario: With the last album we toured the world several times. We had a great run. We started writing new songs two years ago. It was wonderful to have a more regular everyday life and to be with the family in the evenings.
–
Mario, you are married to a Swiss woman.
–
Mario: Yes, Anne is from Zurich. We met ten years ago in a bar. We got married six years ago. Our daughter Elena is seven.
–
Do you miss giving concerts?
–
Mario: Naturally. But you have to be honest. Tour life is pretty tough. And it doesn’t get any more comfortable with age. Especially physically it is very exhausting to play a concert every evening. The hands hurt, the legs, the neck … And it is also a burden on the ears.
–
Did you ever have a plan B if the music didn’t work out?
–
Joe: I would have become an environmental activist, either in the Amazon or with Sea Shepherd, which is committed to protecting the seas. But I would still listen to a lot of music.
–
Environmental protection is a matter close to the heart of Gojira. You also sing about it on «Fortitude» …
–
Joe: Correct. This time we deal with the Amazon. We have Brazilian friends and we work with several organizations and tribes there. People’s sensitivity to the preservation of the rainforest there has increased in the last ten years, but under Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro there has been an increase in clearing and criminal arson in the past two years.
–
Mario: We reach quite a large audience with our band. We’d be idiots if we didn’t use this to convey a positive message that could make the world a better place. Or to draw attention to grievances.
–
Her last CD was nominated for a Grammy. How great was the pressure on the new album?
–
Mario: Enormous. Especially within the band. We are blatant perfectionists. But we also have a great deal of basic trust in our abilities.
–
Joe: We primarily listen to our hearts, we make the music that we ourselves like to hear. Anything else would not be honest. Apart from that, we have to live with this music for the next ten or twenty years. What kind of life it would be if we dedicated it to something we were not 100% convinced of ourselves.
