Austria’s women missed the qualification for the European Championships. At the start of the qualifying home tournament in Graz on Thursday, the women’s team gave away the last chance of promotion with a 3-0 defeat against Spain. In the last game on Saturday (8:20 p.m., live ORF Sport +) against the Greeks – like the Spaniards already qualified – this can no longer be changed.

Last week in Larissa in Greece it was only enough to win against Norway. The Scandinavians did not travel to Graz, which means that all other teams celebrate where wins against them. For the Austrian Volleyball Association (ÖVV) a 3-0 was planned anyway.
A 3: 0 was the dream result for ÖVV team boss Jan de Brandt against Spain, but now the Belgian can prepare his squad against the Greeks for the European Silver League appearances from the end of May.

“Not aggressive enough”
“We played against a Spain that was better than in Greece,” summed up de Brandt. “We fought well, but weren’t fast enough in the first set, not aggressive enough. It was better in the second set and we fought well in the third, but Spain was better. We want to end the tournament with a nice performance. “
Katharina Holzer missed the final consequence, and Ursula Ehrhart was perplexed about the course of the game: “We had acceptance problems throughout the game.”
