A demanding route construction and rapid times at the German Youth Cup in Darmstadt

“We want more”

We look forward to every competition that is held,

says Ines Dull.

The Bavarian national trainer had another reason to be happy, namely that her athletes gambled away in the second and third German Youth Cup (DJC). The Bavarian team won a total of seven medals. On the second weekend in May, the young climbers met in Darmstadt. After bouldering at the first DJC in Nuremberg, it was now the turn of lead and speed. Due to the pandemic, the competition was split over two days: Youth B started on Saturday, and Youth A started on Sunday. The athletes therefore had to complete two competitions in one day, which cost a few grains. In Darmstadt, too, it has been shown again that the girls and boys have become real speed climbers. Fast times that would have been unthinkable not so long ago and close duels ensured tension. For the lead, route setters Christian Bindhammer and Lars Bell conjured up varied tours on the wall that the athletes had to nibble on.

Female Youth B Lead

Even in the qualification, pumpy tours with open handles, slopers and spax, as well as uncomfortable cliff positions where body tension was required, demanded a lot from the girls. Here one athlete was particularly convincing – as was the case with DJC bouldering:

Annika Müller (Augsburg) already mastered the qualification very solidly and moved into first place in the top ten finals. After wobbly trains and greasy handles at the start, it went over volume and large black handles towards the roof. Some athletes struggled in particular at one point: Five girls fell on the same train – the preliminary round decided here. At the end of the day, Annika Müller was able to defend her top position with a clear lead and deservedly secured the gold medal with a height of 37. Second place went to Lilly Neubürger (Aschaffenburg) with 29+. Charlotte Schiefer (Swabia), who was already in 3rd place after qualifying, took bronze with a height of 27+.

Male Youth B Lead

A familiar face also prevailed among the boys: Finn Altemöller (Rhineland-Cologne) already showed in the qualification with the only top in the first tour – a record of the finest with open trains, stands up and snappers – that he was good on this day Will accelerate. Timo Ossig (Allgäu-Kempten) didn’t miss anything in the qualification: With the only top of the second tour – here it went from a runner at the start, who threw many participants off the track, over some baller trains and a hanging passage on small bars to the top – he sat at the top for the time being.

The boys final went perfectly, almost all athletes fell on different moves. Here it was necessary to call up shoulder power, flexibility, tension and endurance, which one athlete did particularly well. Namely Finn Altemöller, who was able to top the final route and who was at the top of the podium with this leadership. Second place went to Johann Söhngen (Frankfurt / Main) with a strong height of 40+. Timo Ossig could no longer maintain his lead from the qualification, but at 30+ he still deserved the bronze medal.

Female youth B speed

Charlotte Schiefer (Swabia) already set an exclamation point in qualifying with the only penalty time. The top 16 made it one round. After each run, the number of athletes was halved – the fastest of the day were in the final at the end. Favorite Charlotte Schiefer showed nerves in every lap and won the race with 11,675 seconds in the grand finale. With a second medal, she was able to end the long day of competition extremely successfully. Second place went to Mia Guttenberger (Bad Tölz) with a time of 12,080 seconds. Nele Thomas (Rhineland-Cologne) just won the small final with 11,581 seconds – she secured bronze.

Male youth B speed

Aodhan Umlauf (Markt Schwaben) showed an unbelievable performance here. Already in the qualification he was the only one to run an eighth time and clearly outperformed his competition. Playfully he ran up the wall in every lap and at the end of the day secured the gold medal more than deservedly with an incredible time of 8,337 seconds.

Johann Söhngen (Frankfurt / Main) showed that he can also be expected in terms of speed. With a very strong 8,549 seconds and an exciting battle against the winner, he secured his second silver medal that day. Jonas Heil (Frankfurt / Main) was able to take 3rd place after his opponent fell in the small final.
