While they are having dinner with a friend, the hotel where Calista and André are staying is broken into. André goes up to their room and notices that Emma, their two-year-old little girl, is no longer there. First, a ransom demand is sent to André’s aunt. Detectives Goren and Eames are setting a trap, but the ransom demand is a red herring. Inspector Goren then suspects the parents of having taken advantage of the hotel burglary to make believe in a kidnapping to cover up the death of little Emma, which actually dates back several months.
