In Russia today the victims of the attack yesterday at a school in Kazan. Seven school students and two adults were killed when a 19-year-old man opened fire at school 175.
There is one at the school memorial site decorated by the locals, where flowers and stuffed animals are laid out and candles are lit. The flags are at half mast on government buildings.
People in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, have been touched by the murders. “Nobody expected something like this to happen here. We are in shock,” said Roza Miftakhutdinova. She lives near the school. “I was working when it happened. I’m scared and shocked.”
“I burst into tears when I heard the news. I have two children myself, one of whom is in school,” said Aigul Smirnova, who works as a music teacher at a neighboring school. “When I think about what these kids have been through, I feel terrible.”
Living shield
One of the first victims to be buried is a female employee of the school. She is said to have been shot when she stood between the shooter and a child.
