The acting Deputy Prime Minister for the Management of European Funds, Atanas Pekanov, is an economist at the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO) and a PhD student at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien), where he teaches. Participates in the Strategic Council under President Rumen Radev.
He worked at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. He returned from a research stay at Harvard School of Economics last spring. His main research interests are the macroeconomic effects of fiscal and monetary policy, which he is working on in his dissertation.

He was twice elected a scholarship holder of the Bulgarian National Bank – in 2015 and in 2019. In 2018 he was elected a scholarship holder of the Austrian Economic Association. He is a member of the Young Researchers Initiative of the Institute for New Economic Thinking.
Since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, it has been analyzing and comparing measures to support the economies of different countries. In April last year, when the crisis began, c interview for “Dnevnik” Pekanov said the measures in Bulgaria are insufficient.
“If we want to ensure a quick and V-shaped recovery from the crisis, we need to keep as many employment relationships as possible, because high unemployment is long and difficult to treat,” he said.
