The American TV station NBC will not broadcast the Golden Globes awards next year. The organization behind the awards for film and TV productions is under attack, because the organization and its jury are not diverse enough in composition and the relationship with film studios is too close.
Last week, the ninety-member organization agreed to a proposal to hire more black members. The number of members must double in eighteen months and members are no longer allowed to accept promotional gifts.
“Reforms of this magnitude take time,” said NBC. “Assuming the plan is implemented, I hope we can re-air the show in 2023.”
Netflix en Amazon
Well-known actors have said in recent days that they do not think the organization’s reform plan goes far enough. Streaming services Netflix and Amazon want to temporarily stop the collaboration.
This may mean that any prize winners will not attend the award ceremony next year. At the ceremony this year, in February, ten prizes went to a Netflix production.
NBC has been broadcasting the Golden Globes awards since 1996. It is unclear whether another TV station wants to take over the ceremony in 2022.
