Ahead of Eid, Malaysia Suddenly had a National Lockdown

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The Malaysian government will impose a national lockdown on the Movement Control Order (MCO) starting on Wednesday (12/5/2021) tomorrow. This is the day before the Eid al-Fitr.

Reporting from The Straits Times, The national lockdown, which will last until June 7, was put in place to reduce the number of cases of Covid-19 infection in the neighboring country.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the decision was taken by the National Security Council, the decision -making body on the pandemic, during a meeting chaired by him on Monday (10/5/2021).

This is the third lockdown order imposed since the start of the pandemic in Malaysia. The MCO this time is likely to be the tightest since March last year.

Muhyiddin said economic activity would continue across the country, but all social activities, events, dining at restaurants and travel between districts and between countries would be prohibited.

Travel across state and district lines is only allowed for work, emergencies, medical appointments, visiting partners and for vaccination appointments.

Only certain outdoor exercises are allowed. The announcement is only a few days before the Eid Al-Fitr, which will be celebrated on Thursday (13/5/2021).

As of Sunday, there were 37,060 active cases and 416 cases in ICU, the highest during the pandemic. Twenty-six deaths were recorded, also the highest seen in a day. As of Monday, Malaysia recorded a total of 440,677 cases of infection and 1,683 deaths.
