Digital technology has boosted reading in China

Chinese adults and children read more books in 2020 than in 2019, both in print and digital format, according to a national reading survey released on April 23, 2021.

The study establishes that the reading volume per capita is equivalent to 4.70 books on paper and 3.29 digital books in 2020. The number of books read by young people stands at 10.71 per person in 2020, i.e. an increase of 0.35 compared to 2019.

City dwellers read 5.54 books on paper per person in 2020, up from 5.48 in 2019, and rural dwellers 3.75 books on paper, up from 3.73 a year earlier.

In addition, online reading and reading on mobile phones have become the main methods of digital reading among adults. In value, the digital reading market reached 35.2 billion yuan (4.5 billion euros) in China last year, which corresponds to an increase of 21.8% year on year.

According to a poll of 20,326 people in 209 cities who are accustomed to reading paper books or listening to recordings of books, each reads an average of 9.1 digital books and listens to 6.3 audiobooks.

At the same time, respondents read 6.2 printed publications in 2020, down 2.6 from the previous year.

More readers are willing to pay for great content online. About 26.8% of digital readers spent about one hundred yuan or more per month on digital reading.

The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and the commercialization of 5G have accelerated the shift from reading from digitization to intelligentization.

New technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality have expanded the coverage of digital reading in libraries and cloud bookstores. In addition, cloud and Internet of Things services in the field of digital reading have entered a phase of rapid development.

The Chinese Academy of Press and Publishing has been carrying out the National Reading Survey since 1999. This year, data was collected in 167 cities through online and telephone surveys.
