IPad Pro 2021 needs a professional iPadOS 15

When the iPad Pro launched in 2015, it set out to be the most powerful iPad ever and empower people to be able to work on a mobile platform. Since then, each iteration of the iPad Pro has always pushed the limits when it comes to power and performance – and the iPad Pro (2021) takes it to the next level with the M1 chip in particular.

A powerful iPad Pro but limited by iPadOS 14

Apple’s in-house processor powers not only the latest Macs, but also the 2021 iPad Pro that Apple announced in April’s keynote. The M1 chip offers 50 times faster processor performance compared to the original iPad Pro and the graphics performance is also said to be up to 1,500 times better than the first iPad. When compared with the iPad Pro 2020, the gain is “only” 40% in CPU and 50% in GPU. But what is that for ?

Indeed, most people don’t complain about the power or performance of the iPad Pro, but rather the limitations of the platform. This is why Apple must bet on iPadOS 15.

While it’s entirely possible that the iPad Pro 2021 will be the best iPad ever made by Apple, the hardware itself cannot truly replace a MacBook or Mac.

While the Thunderbolt port on the iPad Pro (2021) is certainly a welcome addition and will make it much easier to use docks, displays, hubs, and other peripherals, it’s still just one. Harbor. In addition, the purchase of a Magic Keyboard for example, greatly increased the bill, while the autonomy remains lower than that of the latest MacBooks which show practically double, or 20 hours. To make up for all this, Apple hasn’t cut the price, but the upcoming iPadOS 15 could make a difference.

iPadOS 15: an update for the pros?

It is important to remember that iPadOS is still quite recent since the system has emancipated itself in. 2019 with iPadOS 13 which brought a much more specific experience to Apple tablets. A year later, iPadOS 14 was a kind of refinement from the previous iteration. It fixed some of the old usability issues and added some great features like trackpad and mouse support.

For iPadOS 15, Apple should focus on multitasking. Far from being as efficient as on MacOS, the multi-application management of Split View and Slide Over is always limited. Even if some people simply claim the port of macOS on iPad, it would not take much to improve the experience with, for example, greater flexibility in the management of windows (how many of us are lost to make two or three coexist apps at the same time?) as well as in the system to switch between screens. And if the iPad Pro will benefit greatly, the other models will also be much more practical, starting with the iPad Air 4 at the end of 2020.

Another expected element, widgets to be placed anywhere. While iOS 14 allowed the iPhone to have dynamic and personalized widgets on all the home pages, iPadOS 14 contained them in the sidebar. Too bad it could help the overall experience a lot.

IPad is half the job, the rest is iPadOS. What do you expect from iPadOS 15? In the meantime, don’t forget that the iPad Pro M1 is available to order.
