The General Hospital of Alicante has overcome this week the barrier of 2,000 transplants renal, after 32 years of experience and coinciding with the National Transplant Day, which is commemorated tomorrow, Saturday, February 27.
From them, 52 come from living donors, which places the center among those with the largest casuistry in the Valencian Community.
Since the program began 32 years ago they have registered about 1,000 donors. The kidney transplant program marked the inauguration of the transplant activity in the Alicante center. On July 26, 1988, the first intervention took place and at this time the average is 70 kidney transplants per year.
Regarding the average waiting time to receive a kidney, it is 80 days on average.
In the good rhythm of transplants “has been fundamental the generosity of families, who agree to the donation at a time of great pain “, highlights the head of the Transplant Coordination Service, Dr. Carlos de Santiago, who appreciates the solidarity of the citizens. In the last year, more than 90% of families accepted the donation, a percentage considerably higher than the national average, which is 14%.

In what we have of 2021, 15 transplants have been performed: eight from liver, five from kidney and two from cornea. And thirteen donors have been counted.
Since the pandemic of the COVID-19, the average number of transplants in the General de Alicante is six or seven a month, so this 2021 has started with a slight increase in activity.
Year 2020 resulted in a total of 139 transplants, of which 56 were kidney, 36 liver and 47 cornea. In addition, 29 donations were reached, four of them live.
