Yuridia Valenzuela Canseco, better known as “Yuri”, was born on January 6, 1964 in Veracruz, Mexico.
He began his career as a teenage singer. In 1978, released his first album for sale, titled Light up your life. He gained recognition from his participation in the OTI Song Festival, in 1980.
In 1981, with his album Full of sweetness and his single “Damn Spring” —version of “Maledetta Spring” by Loretta Goggi— Yuri achieved international success in Latin America and Spain, broke sales records and became the first Latin American singer to win gold records in Europe.
In the 1980s and early 1990s, established herself as one of the most popular pop music singers in Mexico and Latin America with hits like “Damn spring”, “When the tide goes out”, “She is more than me”, “Leave her”, “What’s wrong with you”, “Behind my window” and “What is the use of pretending”, among others.
In the late 1990s, he took a hiatus from his music career and for some years he devoted himself to the interpretation of Christian music and the preaching of his testimony. In 2002, He returned to commercial music with a much greater impact than his first stage as a pop singer. Parallel to his role as a singer, he has also dabbled in acting. He has participated in some soap operas and movies, but his most successful role in acting was obtained in his personification of Grizabella in Cats.
In 2018, the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences awarded Yuri a Grammy Award for musical excellence.
