Vrbětice: Andrej Babiš calls on EU leaders to expel Russian diplomats

At the informal EU summit on Social Europe taking place in Porto this Friday and Saturday, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš called on European Union leaders to consider the expulsion of Russian diplomats, in solidarity with the Czech Republic in the context of the Vrbětice affair.

This request follows the revelations of the Czech government on the implication of Russian agents in explosions which occurred in Czechia in 2014, in Vrbětice. In mid-April, Prague announced the expulsion of 18 Russian diplomats. Russia reacted by expelling 20 Czech diplomats in turn, prompting Prague to announce further expulsions.

Some countries such as Slovakia or the Baltic countries have expressed their solidarity with the Czech Republic by also resorting to expulsions.
