An initiative for refugee women in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district has been honored as a European example of best practice by the European Commission, the district administration announced.
The project “Living and Working Together” (GeLa) of the Groß-Umstadt association ZIBB – Women for Women was awarded. In the project, refugee women receive advice and help on everyday issues, learn German and catch up on school leaving qualifications. According to the district, coaching and application training are also part of the project. GeLA is part of the Hessian program “NeW” and is supported by the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg in addition to the state of Hesse. In 2018, the Bertelsmann Foundation named GeLa as a best practice example. According to Andrea Balmerth, managing director of the ZIBB, the concept of “encounter and fempowerment” should enable.
The participants come from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Ethiopia, Turkey and Eritrea, among others. Since the beginning of 2020, the offer has also been open to migrant women without a refugee background. jon
