Fire at Dignidad de La Florida camp leaves one dead and at least 19 homeless | National

A fire was registered on the night of this Wednesday and early Thursday in the Dignidad camp, located in the commune of La Florida, affecting several homes and leaving a deceased person as the balance.

The event affected 7 homes in the camp, leaving at least 19 victims, an injured civilian and a deceased person, who died after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest after trying to help control the fire.

The mayor (s) of La Florida, Jeannette Fernández, indicated that the people who live in the Dignidad camp are neighbors who come from Peñalolén and that the houses are made of light material with irregular electrical connection.

Fernández also confirmed that the 58-year-old deceased was due to cardiorespiratory arrest and not directly due to the fire.

“This person died when he was transferred to the Peñalolén hospital, the death would be due to a heart attack, It was not exactly due to injuries caused by the fire, but due to a heart attack, ”he told the community authority.

“We will accompany them with blankets and food, tomorrow we will clean the affected place, to later help them with light material and rebuild what was destroyed, always temporarily,” he added.

For his part, José Figueroa, commander of the Ñuñoa Fire Department, confirmed that 60 volunteers worked to combat the accident and that the emergency was controlled shortly before 02:00.

“7 units of the Ñuñoa Fire Department worked, with about 60 volunteers, the emergency was controlled and the investigation is being carried out to determine the cause and origin,” he explained.
