“I am convinced that the measures adopted today were the best reforms that the Assembly was able to push through, and constitute a major step for tenants”, congratulated New York Governor James Cuomo in a statement.
The text adopted last Friday must now prevent owners from “circumvent the regulation of hundreds of thousands of rents on the occasion of a change of tenant or renovation work”, says AFP.
After a long battle between associations for the defense of the right to housing and those of owners, tenants will now be protected against skyrocketing rent increases, abusive evictions or excessively high deposits. But the measures adopted will only apply to dwellings built before 1974, and in buildings with 6 or more dwellings.
