The initiatives of the Aou of Sassari for the World Hand Hygiene Day.
“A few seconds save lives – wash your hands”: This is the slogan that this year accompanies the World Hand Hygiene Day which falls on May 5th. And in a period of Covid pandemic the importance of hand hygiene is even more evident because it represents one of the most effective actions to reduce the spread of pathogens, including the Sars-CoV-2 virus.
The Sassari Aou does not let itself be found unprepared and, in compliance with the distancing measures and, in some cases of isolation from the outside, will make available to health workers and all citizens information material on the subject. Posters, slides, images will be available on the corporate website of the company in viale San Pietro. An activity that saw the staff of the hospital hygiene and infection control complex at work, in collaboration with doctors in specialist training of the School of Specialization in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine of the University of Sassari.
The correct adherence to the programs of hand hygiene is recommended as one of the key indicators for infection prevention and control, patient safety and the quality of health services around the world.
“The hands of health workers are the most frequent means of transmitting microorganisms. Therefore – says Professor Paolo Castiglia, director of the complex structure of the hospital hygiene and infection control department – it is evident that thehand hygiene represents one of the cardinal principles for the infection prevention, both in everyday social life and in healthcare environments “.
The choice of May 5 to celebrate World Hand Hygiene Day is not accidental. In fact, the fifth day of the fifth month of the year, and as five are the fingers of one hand, there are five i key moments for hand hygiene: before contact with the patient; before an aseptic maneuver (e.g., such as inserting a catheter), to avoid inoculation of pathogens, after exposure to a body fluid (blood, secretions, open wounds), after contact with the patient, after contact with the environment and objects near the patient (sheets, gloves, gown).
“The scientific evidence – adds the epidemiologist nurse Sabina Bellu – shows overwhelmingly that hand hygiene appropriate is the most effective action for stop the spread of infection. Adequate hand hygiene it prevents up to 50 percent of infections acquired during healthcare delivery, including those affecting healthcare personnel ”.
And how important hand hygiene was, already in 1847 he had proved it Ignác Semmelweis. It was the Hungarian doctor who discovered that, in maternity clinics, the high incidence of puerperal fever it could be drastically reduced by disinfecting the hands – it is no coincidence that World Midwives Day is always celebrated on 5 May -. Even today, unfortunately, in developing countries, as many as 1 million of the 4.1 million maternal and neonatal deaths worldwide each year is related to unsanitary childbirth practices, including lack of hand hygiene.
