‘Great honor for Merkel’
According to correspondent Judith van de Hulsbeek, Merkel thinks it is a great honor that she can give the lecture. “She also believes it is very important that Germany continues to play a pioneering role in keeping the memory of World War II alive.”
Merkel sees this as a duty for the Germans, explains Van de Hulsbeek. “She always says that the Germans of today are not responsible for what happened then, but that Germany does have a special responsibility to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
