Görlitz – An external report on the theaters in the Upper Lusatia-Lower Silesia cultural area is causing unrest on the Neisse.

The paper contains savings scenarios for the stages in Görlitz, Bautzen and Zittau: the merger of the orchestras of the Sorbian National Ensemble and the New Lusatian Philharmonic, the drama branches in Bautzen and Zittau, the end of the music ensemble in Görlitz. A theater would only remain there for purchased productions.
But there is opposition to the paper. “We are by no means questioning music theater, the cities of Görlitz and Zittau have a right of veto,” says Görlitz Mayor of Culture Michael Wieler (57).
Especially in times of structural change, the attractiveness of the location shouldn’t be weakened. But he too is aware of the pressing problem of theater financing.
“The time of the large conglomerates is over, small, agile units on site are promising,” says the new Görlitz director Daniel Morgenroth, who is amazed by the excitement.
Apart from content-related reservations, he sees no significant savings in the proposed variants, and also: A theater must be rooted in the city, present and active with ensemble and employees: “A pure example house is anemic and will not be loved.”

He receives support from District Administrator Bernd Lange (65, CDU). The report is only a basis for discussion, according to Lange: “I don’t want to close any theater location – neither Görlitz nor Zittau. We want to preserve diversity.”
The report was initiated by the city and district of Görlitz and commissioned by the cultural area.
