Frankfurt (dpa / lhe) – With more than 70 shuttle minibuses, the on-demand offer is to be significantly expanded, especially in the Rhine-Main area. “By ordering the all-electric vehicles, we are not only creating a new, emission-free transport offer, but are also taking the next big step towards the largest on-demand offer in Germany,” said the managing director of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV), Knut Ringat, on Monday. The buses are used on demand by seven RMV partners, such as HEAG mobilo in Darmstadt, traffiQ in Frankfurt or ESWE Verkehr in Wiesbaden.

After ordering by app or phone, the shuttle, which offers space for six to eight guests, picks them up and brings them as close as possible to their destination or to a transfer point for bus and train. The service closes the gap between bus and taxi, they said: You can usually get on at an agreed place nearby 10 to 15 minutes after ordering.

And: If several passengers were traveling in the same direction, an algorithm would combine the travel requests. “By the end of 2021, operations are to start at all partners and, particularly on the first and last mile, supplement traditional local public transport with buses and trains,” said Ringart.

In the Offenbach district and Darmstadt, on-demand shuttles are already on offer.
