Empire State Building turns 90 as an emblem of NYC

The Empire State Building turns 90 today.

On May 1, 1931, the construction of this 102-story building was completed in a record time of one year and 45 days.

By pressing a button and turning on the lights, President Hoover made history at the inauguration of this renowned landmark in the city.

Located where the former Waldorf Astoria hotel used to be, visitors paid just ten cents to enter the Empire State Building when it opened.

At that time it was the tallest building in the world. It currently occupies position number 43, including its antenna measuring 1,454 feet tall.

And it continues to be one of the most important tourist attractions in the world, receiving more than four million visitors a year.

In 2011, Cornell University determined that it is the most photographed building in the world.

For today, Mayor de Blasio is expected to deliver a speech commemorating his 90th anniversary.
