KOMPAS.com – Wearing masks in the midst of a pandemic has become mandatory. Masks not only help maintain health, but also protect others.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends wearing a single, multi-layered mask when on the move outdoors.
Another recommendation is to wear two types of masks. One disposable mask covered with a cloth mask.
Apart from masks, the CDC also recommends keeping a distance of at least 1.5-2 meters from other people to reduce the risk of transmitting Covid-19 and other diseases such as influenza.
Meanwhile, recently a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found interesting facts.
In fact, making a few modifications to the earloop on the mask can make the mask fit better on the face.
The modifications also make the use of masks 20 percent more effective at preventing transmission. The better the use, the better the filtration.
UNC Health through its official YouTube channel uploaded a video showing how to use masks to be more effective.
In the video, the director of Infection Prevention at UNC Hospital Emily Sickbert-Bennett, PhD, is seen demonstrating a simple trick for a disposable mask.
The trick is to fold the mask, unite the top and bottom sides. Then tie the mask hook rope and push the knot to the edge of the mask. After that, use a mask and adjust it to your face.
According to the CDC, this technique can improve the wearing of a surgical mask and make it more effective.
