The quake was recorded off the island of Honshu

An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale was registered in Japan, AFP reported. The epicenter was reported near Miyagi Prefecture, close to the 2011 quake that killed more than 18,000 people.

The American Geological Survey states that the quake was registered off the northeast coast of Honshu. It was felt in both the northeastern and eastern prefectures of the country, including Tokyo.

There are currently no reports of casualties or damage.

No emergencies have been reported at Fukushima-1, the nuclear power plant that was badly damaged in the devastating 2011 earthquake.
