The management of household waste is a real problem for the Tunisian government. To deal with this issue, the Ministry of Local Affairs and the Environment recently launched a call for projects to build sorting or recycling centers for household waste. All in a desire for decentralization.

Tunisia’s demographic growth is significant, since from 11.6 million inhabitants in 2019, the country has grown to more than 11.9 million inhabitants in 2021. An increase in the population which inevitably gives rise to concerns, to the image of household waste management. Eager to resolve the issue urgently, the government has decided to favor decentralization of municipal waste treatment. To achieve this, a call for projects has been launched for the creation of sorting or waste treatment centers by fermentation. A choice which also makes it possible to promote the production of biogas.
Over 2.4 million tonnes of household waste treated per year
Cities wishing to respond favorably now have until May 31, 2021 to submit their file to the Tunisian Ministry of Local Affairs and Environment. At the budgetary level, the government undertakes to finance the construction of the centers selected at the end of the call for proposals, during fiscal year 2021. More than 2.4 million tonnes of household and similar waste are generated each year. . To treat them, the National Waste Agency (ANGED) packs them in 55,000 tonnes of plastics, before being put in bins. Of this waste, 63% is organic matter.
