The United States is now also imposing restrictions on air traffic from India. President Biden has announced that many travelers who have been to India in the past fourteen days will be banned from Tuesday for the time being. Biden wants to prevent variants of the virus that circulate in India from spreading in the US. The CDC, the American RIVM, has let him know that it is concerned about some of those variants, because they may spread faster and are less easily stopped by vaccinations.
In India, infection record after infection is broken, with more than 380,000 new infections registered and nearly 3,500 deaths in the last 24 hours. Experts believe the actual number of infections and deaths is many times higher.
The Indian healthcare system is suffering from the wave of contamination and hospitals are facing serious shortages of oxygen, beds and medicines. Biden met with Indian Prime Minister Modi earlier this week and pledged to support him, including drugs, corona tests and oxygen.
