The Film Society of Lincoln Center of New York will be honoring two exceptional actresses, mother and daughter, until February 7. Jane Birkin and Charlotte Gainsbourg are reunited for the first time in a common tribute.
The retrospective is called Jane and Charlotte forever, reference to the famous song, Charlotte for ever, which Serge Gainsbourg had written and sung with his daughter, in 1986. But if the first name of Jane Birkin appears next to that of Charlotte Gainsbourg in the title of this exhibition, it is not to pay tribute to Serge, but because that the Film Society of Lincoln Center of New York decided to celebrate the two women, the time of a retrospective of some of their films.
Mother and daughter therefore met this Friday to discover the event in New York. This is the first time that they have been honored together in this way. Charlotte did not shy away from her pleasure to be received alongside her mother.

19 films will be screened in this huge Lincoln Center in New York, which includes in addition to the Film Society, the Metropolitan Opéra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Lincoln Jazz Center Orchestra, directed by Wynton Marsalis. Among them, the only feature film that Jane and Charlotte have shot together, The little love of Agnès Varda, left in 1988.
Why bring them together for this retrospective? For their lineage, of course, but also because their cinematographic choices are guided by “adventure and risk” explained the director of programming, Dennis Lim. This taste for risk, Yvan Attal’s companion is concerned about. defends.

Charlotte Gainsbourg multiplies family experiences. She is a real support for her mother, for whom the last few months have not been easy, between the death of her first daughter, Kate Barry, and recurring health problems. Even if she laughs at it sometimes, she didn’t say a word about it yesterday.
After having mentioned the film screened, directed by her former husband Jacques Doillon, the first, according to her, to have “asked her for things that few people (her) thought capable”, she who until then “was considered rather a light actress”, Jane Birkin paid tribute to the director Jacques Rivette, who died the same day.
She had toured three times for him, during his career, notably in Love on the floor, which will also be shown during this retrospective.
“He was quite extraordinary” and had “his way of doing things”. For her, he was “someone who seemed to care about nothing but filming. I was very lucky, ”she adds.
