LeVar Burton stars in a new commercial for Ryan Reynolds’ co-owned liquor, Aviation Gin. The gin itself was created over 100 years ago, but was brought to market by Christian Krogstad and Ryan Magarian in 2006. Earlier this week, Ryan Reynolds premiered a new commercial for Aviation Gin in which Burton makes an appearance after receiving a presentation from Reynolds himself. The ad begins with Reynolds announcing that because he kept hearing how great Burton was, he had decided to have the veteran actor step in and be the spokesperson for the brand. Seconds later, Burton appears on the screen, sitting in front of a pool while drinking a glass of gin. From there, the commercial takes a comedic turn that will definitely be memorable.
In the tweet announcing the new commercial, Reynolds jokingly says that he’s starting a campaign to get Burton to appear in just about everything. Though it’s obviously a bit, Reynold’s tone comes from a recent fan campaign to make Burton the new host of Danger!, a position that has yet to be filled after the death of long-time host Alex Trebek. Burton has since been advertised as one of many Danger! Hosts. Burton will be the guest host for the episodes that will air over the course of two weeks in July.
On the Reynolds end of things, this new commercial is just the latest example of how effective your comedy brand can work as a marketing tool. Previously, Reynolds launched an Aviation Gin commercial hilariously reworking the classic Christmas poem, “A Visit from Saint Nicholas,” and brought Rick Moranis out of retirement to collaborate with Mint Mobile, another company Reynolds is a co-owner of.
