On Saturday, Kanye West and the Sunday Service Choir paid tribute to DMX with several musical performances at the late rapper’s memorial.
At Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, the rapper and his acclaimed gospel band performed to a 1900 audience, opening the service with an arrangement of “Keep On Movin” by Soul II Soul.
Later, they will perform their original track, “Excellent”, as well as “You bring the sunshine” by the Clark Sisters and the anthem “Jesus Loves Me”.
Other notable guests at DMX’s “Celebration of Life” were rappers Nas and Swizz Beats. Eve, Jadakiss, Styles P and Drag-On – original members of hip-hop collective Ruff Ryders, who launched DMX to stardom, have also appeared.
Earlier today, DMX’s body was transported to Barclays Center from his hometown of Yonkers, in a red coffin resting on top of a black monster truck. Surrounded by hundreds of motorcyclists, the truck had “Long Live DMX” painted on the side and was seen as a tribute to the motorcycle enthusiast Ruff Ryders.
The rapper, born Earl Simmons, died on April 9 of a heart attack, believed to have been caused by a drug overdose. He was 50 years old.
