Jacob deGrom can show at any time that he is ready to go beyond what he has done … and on Friday he set the example of that when he broke his strikeout mark in one game by swinging 15 rivals of the Washington Nationals.
The Mets starter outing was the best of his career, when pitching a complete game, in which he only allowed two hits, without giving away a passport, in the New Yorkers 6-0 win. With those 15 chocolates it reached 50 in the season.
The right-hander already broke the major league record, of most strikeouts in a pitcher’s first four starts, established just last weekend by Shane Bieber, the Cleveland ace, who racked up 48.
DeGrom (2-1), a two-time Cy Young recipient, retired his last 19 rivals to score his second shutout and fourth complete game in 187 starts without walking out. Also, as eighth in order, deGrom doubled to give New York the lead. With information from mlb.com
