Champion stars introduced for the 2004/05 season
The DFL introduced the championship stars for the 2004/05 season. Since then, first and second division teams who have won a German championship there since the Bundesliga was founded in 1963 have been allowed to wear this badge of honor.

Second regulation by the DFB
That is why the German Football Association (DFB) introduced a second regulation for the 2005/06 season, which applies in its area of responsibility from the 3rd league downwards. According to this, clubs with at least one title are allowed to wear a single star with the number of championships won (before 1963/64 or GDR titles) in the middle.
Third division team Dynamo Dresden, for example, has a star for its eight GDR championship titles, as does league rival 1. FC Kaiserslautern, who won German championships twice before and after the founding of the Bundesliga. Should Dresden return to the 2nd league at the end of the season, the star would have to get off the jersey again because of the then applicable DFL rule.
