World Submarine Rescue and History

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Technology developed for rescue submarine continues to develop at every time. There are some missions that have survived, but some are not.

Submarine rescue mission was successful

In August 1920, the USS S-5 leaked and sank to the ocean floor. The crew quickly re-lifted the compartment to return the ship to the surface.

A nearby ship saw the wrecked sub and gave it air and water to breathe, while the crew bore holes in the hull to apply pressure, and 38 people were saved.

In addition, the icy waters of Gareloch in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, became one of the first successful submarine rescues in the world.

In January 1917 the British submarine HMS K13 dived in trials, it had 80 crew members and British naval officers and civilians on board.

At 22.00 after HMS K13 was declared drowned, rescuers arrived and divers were dispatched to identify the location.

With the assistance of horsemen, the bow K13 was brought to the surface, and supported by barges on both ships. The ship was then towed and its body parts were cut.

Quoted Naval Technology, after 57 hours of drowning, 48 people were rescued in the sinking incident of the K13 submarine.

In May 2002 the US Navy’s research submarine USS Dolphin suffered a severe leak and fire off the coast of San Diego, California, USA. The ship was successfully abandoned by the entire crew and civilian Navy personnel who were rescued by a naval ship that was at the location.

There were no casualties or injuries in the incident, while the wreckage was pulled back to San Diego for investigation.

Subsequently, the Russian Priz class rescue submarine AS-28 became entangled off the coast of the Kamchatka peninsula on August 5, 2005 at a depth of 190 meters. The submarine was trapped and the air supply was running low.

After deploying a rescue team from the British Navy using the ROV, finally the submarine with 7 crew members was successfully freed from the seabed and returned to the surface.

Submarine rescue missions over time

In the early 20th century the focus of rescue was only on escaping from sinking ships. There are two options available for the submerged or damaged submarine (DISSUB), namely escape or escape.

Escape is the process by which the crew leaves the ship and reaches the surface without external assistance. Meanwhile, the rescue was carried out by an outside party who removed the trapped crew from the submarine.

At the start of the modern submarine era, the initial focus was on escaping using the breathing apparatus used by coal miners. The system used is the German Dräger breathing apparatus, which was used when the submarine U3 sank in 1911.

Prior to 1939, it was generally thought that if the crew could not escape DISSUB, there was little that could be done to save them.

During the 1920’s some navies, particularly the USN, used rescue-type operations with some success. But rescue operations are carried out under ideal conditions that are rarely found.
