Did you know that Tonkin, the Skyscrapers and the Insa campus are high places of the contemporary outdoor art scene? There are indeed creations from public commissions or from the artistic 1%, this legislation which aims to transform roundabouts and other motorway areas into works of art not always perceptible to ordinary people.
Fortunately, to help us see more clearly, the Institute of Contemporary Art (IAC) of Villeurbanne has published on its site visit plans for the Frac weekend in the open air, an event already past but as the works are permanent and installed in the public space, they can be admired all year round.
On the program, therefore, three walks of 40 to 50 minutes each to discover the French capital of culture 2022 from a different perspective. At the bend of the streets, we meet big international names, such as the duo Anne and Patrick Poirier, the New Yorker Matt Mullican or François Morellet, one of the precursors of minimalism.
Belvedere
Among the most astonishing works, we find the old fireplace of the Boissier dyeing factory in the middle of the park of the Center, transformed into a belvedere by Felice Varini thanks to an arch-shaped walkway for a levitating ride. Much more intimate and less monumental, the work of Cécile Dupaquier asks passers-by about their state of mind with illuminated messages at the Condorcet station that are triggered when pedestrians pass. So many creations to peck in several times according to the three routes proposed by the IAC, or to swallow at once by bike for the more athletic and art lovers.
Pi-Rococo
To celebrate the year 2000, François Morellet has installed zigzag neon lights wherever it has been exhibited, such as here at the IAC. A series of works entitled Pi-Rococo because each angle is the translation in degrees of each of the digits of the number pi while the curved lines give a baroque aspect to the whole.
