According to SIA Schenker board member Evija Sedola, the company is the first logistics group to offer CO2-neutral air transport. “Carbon-neutral flights between Frankfurt and Shanghai will save 174 tons of fossil fuels a week,” says Sedola.
“Although this service is more expensive for companies, more and more customers are trying to reduce their environmental footprint, make supply chains sustainable and achieve climate neutrality. In the near future, our Baltic customers will also have access to carbon-neutral air transport,” adds E. Sedola.
According to her, the aviation industry has agreed to halve CO2 emissions by 2050. “As aircraft will not be able to use alternative fuels, such as hydrogen or electricity, for technical reasons in the near future, sustainable aviation fuel is currently the only available way to reach the goal. This fuel, which is chemically similar to fossil fuels, is produced from used food. oils, biomass, etc., “explains E. Sedola.
“Although sustainable fuels are currently more expensive and limited in availability, they are compatible with existing infrastructure and aircraft. Sustainable fuels can contain up to 80% less greenhouse gases, the rest being offset by, for example, atmospheric carbon capture and storage in cultivated plants. This ensures that CO2 – neutral flights do not release new greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, “said E. Sedola.
