In the second year of the lockdown, the Großglockner High Alpine Road opens a little later than usual. Instead of the national holiday on May 1st, the route is to be opened to traffic this year until mid-May, but probably in the second week of May. The snow removal has already started.

The workers shouldn’t get bored this year. On the south side in Carinthia, the snowiest winter since 1951 comes to an end with more than five meters of fresh snow. And there has also been a lot of fresh snow on the north ramp in the last three weeks.
If the work between the communities of Fusch (Pinzgau) in Salzburg and Heiligenblut (Spittal an der Drau district) in Carinthia progresses quickly and no further onset of winter makes the evacuation difficult, according to the road operator GROHAG, a breakthrough can be expected in the second week of May. Experience has shown that it usually takes a few days before the road can actually be opened.
Carinthian sister roads open from May 8th
From today’s perspective, the Nockalmstrasse, which is also part of the GROHAG Group, and the Goldeck Panoramastrasse in Carinthia will open on May 8th, and the water worlds in Krimml should also go back into operation on the same weekend.
For the excursion destinations, there will be basic supplies in the form of “take-away” for the first few days when the catering trade cannot yet be open as usual.
